Our History

The first Men’s Shed in Sunbury was started a few years ago as part of the Macedon Street Community Health Centre with a primary focus on rehabilitation and health care. Whilst limited in size it provided a valuable service and a place where men of all ages could meet and get involved in various projects, or just meet and have a cup of tea or coffee and chat.

With the exponential growth of Sunbury over the years it became necessary to consider larger premises and the formation of a Men’s Shed linked to the Victorian Men’s Shed Association and the Australian Men’s Shed organisations. This would allow for a much broader agenda in relation to men’s health in general and involvement with the with the wider community in developing and implementing additional services, facilities and activities not covered at that time.

The idea for a Hume Men’s Shed in Sunbury came from a member of the Cragieburn Men’s shed that was at the time, being established and organised through the Roxburgh Park Community Church with Pastor Milton Oliver at the helm.

Hume Men’s Shed(Sunbury) Inc started life around September 2010 when a few
interested men got together to discuss the establishment of a Men’s Shed in Sunbury. Milton Oliver was involved in the very first meetings and with his experience and expertise Hume Men’s Shed (Sunbury) very quickly became a reality. We were incorporated in December 2010, obtained an ABN and registered with the ATO as a ‘Not for profit’
organisation. All the other requirements of a new organisation, such as a  Constitution,  3rd party liability insurance, membership forms and the like fell into place.
Negotiations with Hume City Council for a lease on the large unused shed adjacent to the
‘Grasslands’ area in Evans Street progressed at a fair pace culminating in Hume City Council handing us the keys in February 2012.

In the 18 months it took to gain possession of the shed the committee and growing membership were busy raising funds doing sausage sizzles at Bunnings (who have been fantastic with their help and assistance) and gathering donated machinery, equipment and materials. A list of the many local people and businesses that have supported our endeavours is elsewhere on this web site.

We are looking forward to working with the ‘Health Centre’ Men’s Shed and indeed all the other ‘Sheds’ in the Hume shire, in providing a community facilities we can all be proud of. A memorandum of understanding has been drafted with this concept as the core principle.
